1&1 Gets Donut, gTLD Variety Pack
Over the next three years, the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) plans to release more than 700 new domain extensions and, according to 1&1 CEO Hosting Robert Hoffmann, 1&1 expects to offer a significant amount of those as a registrar.
1&1 is closer to that goal after signing the Registry-Registrar Agreement with Donuts Inc. That sounds confusing, but basically Donuts Inc. is the industry’s largest registry by number of new TLD applications and is expected to offer more than 150 extensions as early as mid-January 2014. With this agreement, 1&1 is able to provide all TLDs offered by the Donuts registry to its customers. 1&1’s partnership with Donuts will give its customers the ability to leverage some of the most popular new domain extensions including .BUSINESS, .EMAIL and .CONTRACTORS, to name a few.
The new TLDs bring new branding and targeting opportunities to Web business, because they improve a business’s chance of acquiring a popular domain name and companies are able to identify themselves online, such as through an extension that includes a location, an industry, etc.
