It’s too early to tell if the launch of Google Plus will pose a legitimate threat to Facebook in the social networking space, but other social media mainstays such as Twitter might have cause to be concerned. Reports that Facebook’s numbers are in decline are most likely exaggerated, and the company now claims to have upwards of 700 million users. Twitter, on the other hand, has a fraction of that, and the fact that comScore recently reported Google’s passing of the 1 billion monthly unique visitors mark is an important part of the discussion. Also key to the discussion is the amount of effort and resources with which Google is building its burgeoning social network, and rebranding services such as Blogger and Picasa to fit more comfortably under the Plus umbrella. With the new +1 button likely to create a significant effect on Google search results, marketers and other Web professionals had better be paying attention as well.
