The Age of AI Chat, Bots Come to Skype
Skype is embracing the bot craze in a big way.
Over 30,000 developers are reportedly building bots for the platform and some are even bringing their functionality to the popular Microsoft owned and operated offering.
The opportunity for developers is rather immense and Microsoft is continually making the service easier to use for developers. Microsoft announced three updates to the bot framework in July, for example, with the most notable being group functionality. After initially showcasing Skype Bots back in April (and rolling out updates in July), a new collections of chatbots have finally been added to the Skype Bot Directory and are available for Windows, Android, iOS, Mac and Web apps.
Skype's new bot push will enable users to bring bots into group conversations to manage tasks and collaborate with others. Users can browse flight times or access travel recommendations with the Hipmunk or SkyScanner chatbot, for example, or review upcoming events with the Stubhub chatbot. Pretty cool.
Another interesting integration is with the IFTTT Bot, which will provide Skype users automated messages from the apps, devices, and websites based on the triggers of heir choice, including breaking news, the weather, social media notifications, and more.
