Firefox Add-on of the Day: PicLens

Posted on 2.10.2008
Last year I became a fan of CoolIris, a Firefox add-on that provides a pop-up window when you hover your mouse over any clickable link or image. The pop-up window is enabled to navigate, provides temporary bookmarks for easier navigation and makes it easy to send links to other people. If you don't like what you see, move your mouse off of the new window and it disappears.

Now CoolIris has released another great add-on in PicLens. Hover over an image, click the icon at the bottom and you're presented with a full-screen 3-D photo gallery that you can navigate by dragging the mouse, clicking buttons or by scrolling. You can also start a slide show, click to zoom and toggle to full-screen mode. It's a great tool to quickly browse photos in a site like Flickr. Instead of scrolling down, then having to click to the next page, the next page and so on, you can simply click one image and get a scrolling view of all of the images from the results of your query.

PicLens also offers a tool to create full-screen slideshows for your own website or blog. Both CoolIris and PicLens can be found here.

PicLens works well with and supports a wide varitey of sites including Flickr, Photobucket, Picasa, Facebook, MySpace, Google Images and Yahoo Images. CoolIris has done a superb job repeatedly launching updates to the CoolIris Preview tool, so I expect the same for PicLens as time goes on.
