Google Mobile Phone - An Experiment for the Rest of Us?
Google has a prototype mobile phone that they are currently shopping to other phone manufacturers and mobile networks, in an effort to stake an early claim in the rising mobile market. They are also considering a bold plan of advertising by bundling ads with the mobile applications of the search engine, email and Web browser.
"We're partnering with carriers, manufacturers, and content providers around the world to bring Google search and Google applications to mobile users everywhere," Google spokesman Michael Kirkland said.
"I don't know how successful it's going to be. The model of an ad-supported wireless Web has not been successful over the past 10 years," said Jeff Kagan, a wireless industry analyst in Atlanta. "The average adult who can afford a cell phone is not going to want to listen to ads."
The mobile Web industry has been struggling for years to figure out a way to adverstise through mobile devices and websites and this could be a grand experiment to determine how effective these strategies can be.
