Hulu Officially Launches

Posted on 3.11.2008
It's an exciting, landmark day for online video - Hulu has launched to the public. This is not your average video portal. Here are high-quality, full-length TV shows and movies, played in a nice large format and devoid of the graininess you're accustomed to with traditional online video. And each show or movie is shown with very limited commercial interruption - a 30-minute TV show has just two 15-second spots.

There's quite a selection too. Everything from Simpsons and The Office to NBC News specials and ... wait for it ... Doogie Howser, M.D. Movies include some classic hits like The Usual Suspects (Kaiser Sose), The Big Lebowski (The Dude abides), The Jerk (all I need ...) and Ice Age. For the movies, you have a selection of ad formats. Either first watch a trailer for another movie, or start your movie directly with normal commercial breaks. And one of the best parts - load time is incredibly fast.

Did I mention you can watch in full-screen mode? And embed on your own website?

Needless to say, I'm impressed. I wonder how long until your employer puts Hulu on the "banned" list of websites?

Hulu was founded in 2007 as a joint venture owned by NBC Universal and News Corp. In addition, Hulu has closed a $100 million investment from private equity firm Providence Equity Partners. They have more than 50 content providers including FOX, NBC, MGM, Sony Pictures Television, Warner Bros. and Lionsgate.
