Pandora-ize your iTunes with Tune Explorer, TheFilter

Posted on 2.13.2008
Readers of this blog know that I'm a music fan and a Pandora fan. But one of the inherent problems - or pleasures, depending on how you look at it - with Pandora is the inability to pick the exact songs you want to hear. Pandora will use similarities in music you like to play other music, but you can't choose and you can only skip ahead a limited amount of times. TuneExplorer and TheFilter will create playlists based on your music rather than random selections.

TuneExplorer, like Pandora, uses algorithms to examine the "pitch values, pitch variance, fundamental strengths, and a host of other sonic qualities." Then TuneExplorer analyzes the music on your computer and builds playlists based on those qualities. From there you can listen to the playlists through TuneExplorer or send the playlists to iTunes.

TheFilter works in a similar way, has a slightly more intuitive interface and works with iTunes, Windows Media Player and Nokia Mobile Phone. Another neat feature at TheFilter is the ability to create and publish an iPod widget for your website.
