Tool-Of-The-Day: Vector Magic

Posted on 11.12.2007

There will come a time in your life as a Webprenuer that it will be necessary to convert a Web-based image into an image that can be used offline - say for a direct mail campaign for instance or even a print advertisement. Lucky for you, I've got my finger on the pulse of all things bleeding edge cool. Today's tool-of-the-day is VectorMagic and it's truly amazing.

This current project from Stanford converts images from raster types to vector types - a process called "vectorization". Essentially an online auto-tracer, VectorMagic allows users to make images look great when printing at any size or quality because it allows you to scale an image without making it blurry or pixelated. Raster images are pixel-based, whereas vector images are represented by geometric shapes such as lines, circles and curves. Users are able to input JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP and TIFF files and have them outputted as EPS, SVG and PNG files. The online tool is comparable tool to Adobe Live Trace and Corel Power Trace.
