Everyone knows that the Web isn’t exactly the last bastion of privacy in the world. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Facebook, of course, has drawn criticism for making its users’ personal information accessible to advertisers; and Microsoft, Yahoo and Google have all taken heat as well. A growing portion of ’Net users, however, are no longer sitting idly by. Ghostery, Adblock Plus and TrackerBlock, all companies that supply anti-tracking tools, reported huge upward spikes in usage in 2011. Ghostery’s product was downloaded by 140,000 new users each month, while Adblock Plus is currently being used daily by over 17 million users worldwide.
