A Typograpghy Tool for Better Web Type

Posted on 4.01.2015

One of the best ways to let your website stand out is to take control of the typography on your website.

While CSS gives designers an immense amount of control in seperating content from the presentation, sometimes you need even more and a tool like Type.js can do just that. This rather unique typogrpahy tool essentially provides a shortcut to control various elements of Web type that appears on a website, allowing designers to write new CSS properties and take finer control of the typography styles on the Web.

The set up is really straightforward; just upload the type.js file to your site and link it within your HTML (before the end of the body is optimal). Then, simply add a style tag befor ethe script and write in your new CSS properties (the same way you would add in any other styules).

There is quite a bit you can do with Type.js, including adjusting the sapce between two specific glyphs (kerning) with a very simple syntax and even set rules for where lines will break in a paragraph (rag adjust). It's even possible to set a minimum and maximum font-zie for text when using a viewport unit for font-size.

While Type.js styles do not work in external CSS files (only working in on-paeg CSS in a style tag) making it somewhat limited, there's sure to be an instance in your daily digital design where a solution like this would make a great deal of sense.
