Acquisitions and Milestones
Several Web companies have either made significant transactions or passed major milestones in recent weeks. Here is a quick rundown of all the action:
■ eBay announced that it has agreed to purchase mobile payments provider Zong for approximately $240 million in cash.
■ eBay also completed its acquisition of GSI Commerce in a deal valued at approximately $2.4 billion.
■ Domain registrar GoDaddy has been sold to three private equity firms for approximately $2.25 billion.
■ LivingSocial announced the acquisitions of international daily deals sites Ensogo (Thailand and the Philippines), DealKreken (Indonesia) and GoNabit (the Middle East).
■ Twitter acquired social analytics firm BackType for an undisclosed amount.
■ Yell has agreed to the acquisition of Znode, a privately-owned leader in multi-store e-commerce.
■ PayPal has confirmed that it has surpassed 100 million active users and that it was doubling its estimate for 2011 mobile payments to $3 billion.
■ Foursquare has received its 10 millionth location-based check-in, and the company also announced that it has more than 500,000 businesses using the service.
■ Matt Mullenweg, creator of the WordPress blogging platform and founder of Automattic, announced that WordPress.com blogs have passed the 50-million mark.
