Acquisitions and Milestones - 'Net Briefs Dec. 2011
Each month within Website Magazine's print edition, our editors feature some of the most important acquisitions and milestones in the Web business space. Movers and shakers this past month inlcude Google and SocialGrapple, Facebook and Friend.ly, Silverpop and Placepunch, FederatedMedia and Lijit Networks, IBM, Hootsuite, LinkedIn and others.
■ Google has acquired SocialGrapple, a Twitter statistics startup, most likely to help track activity on its rapidly growing social network, Google+.
■ Facebook purchased friend.ly, the startup developer that created a Facebook application that allows users to ask and answer questions of other people.
■ Silverpop has purchased location-based marketing platform PlacePunch , which will help grow the Web-based solution company’s Social Connect Strategy aimed at marketers.
■ Federated Media recently bought Lijit Networks, which specializes in providing search and analytics tools for blogs. The purchase will give Federated Media a host of instruments for its own network.
■ IBM has acquired software company Platform Computing, best known for its high-performance computing, cluster- and grid-management software and recent work in cloud computing and big data.
■ HootSuite recently purchased location based marketing tool Geotoko as a means of enhancing its geo-location capabilities in the social media management dashboard. Geotoko reports on locationbased social media interactions such as key influencers, customer sentiment and demographic patterns.
■ LinkedIn has purchased IndexTank, a startup that has created a real-time, hosted search engine service. The company has 11 employees, 9 of which are engineers, which was likely one of LinkedIn’s motivations behind the purchase.
■ Flicker, the photo sharing service owned by Yahoo, has officially hit the 200 million mark for its Creative Commons licensed photos.
