To be an affiliate, or not to be? For millions of Web workers, that is the question.

Affiliate marketing, a type of performance-based advertising, rewards those individuals (or websites/groups) who refer new customers to a brand.

Now practiced reguarly by companies both big and small, affiliate marketing is appealing for a variety of reasons (extended reach being one of the most common) but most brands simply have no idea how it got started or what the future holds.

The Internet completely changed the practice of referral marketing. As the Web grew and technology advanced, brands (both publishers and retaielrs) slowly became more and more interested in affiliate (aka performance) marketing and it has been an industry in and of itself for well over a decade - nearly two decades in fact.
