Alert The Locals - 'Net Briefs
AT&T is trying its hand at location-based deals with the release of AT&T Alerts. The program makes shoppers aware of deals near them through SMS text messages. Those who use the AT&T service can opt-in to receive discounts directly to their mobile devices based on their phone’s geo-location data. The company started tinkering with this service after partnering with Placecast’s white label technology to let users sign up for deals in specific locations, although that was limited to just New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. AT&T Alerts already boasts a number of notable partners, including the Gap, Staples, Duracell and Motorola.
