Amazon Patents Predictive Ordering/Shipping System

Posted on 1.19.2014

Amazon has apparently patented a system that will enable retailers to create predictive models to forecase where and presumably when an item will need to ship.

The company's patent for "anticipatory shipping" will compile data such as product searches, page visits, wish list items, order history, time on page, items within a shopping cart and return history. Amazon will use that information to "pre-ship" items closer to warehouses in the buyers's location - perhaps  even directly to the eventual recipient.

It's unclear what impact this will have on the time it takes to ship a typical order. If items are already located at one of Amazon's numerous existing hubs, the possibility of more items being available for same-day delivery increases (which in turn makes Prime memberships (of which it sold one million in December '13 alone).
