Are We Approaching a Mobile-First Era?

Posted on 2.17.2015

Mobile is one of the hottest trends today and as consumers continue to use their devices more and more, the young channel's importance to brands will only elevate.

PayPal and Ipsos have released the findings from their latest study, which details the importance of mobile in the coming future. The study was conducted with the help of 17,500 consumers in 22 countries.

PayPal and Ipsos found that from 2013-2016 the multi-country average compound annual growth rate for mobile commerce is projected to be 42 percent vs. 13 percent for e-commerce on a whole (which also includes mobile commerce). While the study makes it clear that laptops, desktops and notebooks are still the clear frontrunners in total e-commerce spend, accounting for 85 percent, mobile shopping is still an important part of the journey. In fact, 36 percent of those surveyed stated they searched for product information on their phone in the last 12 months along with 27 percent stating they used their phone to locate and find information about a store or business.

Another interesting finding from the study was that 64 percent of those surveyed stated they had made a purchase from within an app while just 52 percent responded saying they have purchased something from within their mobile browser.

“We are on the cusp of the mobile-first era,” said Anuj Nayar, senior director of global initiatives for PayPal. “At PayPal we’ve seen our mobile growth rise from less than one percent of our payment volume in 2010 to more than 20 percent in 2014.”
