Around & Around We Go: Auto Ads in the Google Carousel

Google introduced a new mobile advertising format recently called Model Automotive Ads that will let users swipe through and see additional images.

Google is rolling out this ad format starting with the automotive industry to help customers see more photos of the vehicle they’re potentially interested in buying, but advertisers can almost guarantee a similar model will be introduced to other industries in short order.

“Model Automotive ads recreates that showroom experience by featuring images of your cars along with additional information about each of them, like estimated MPG or advanced features, right within mobile search results,” Google announced.

What makes this development so interesting is that Google indicated it will also provide data to advertisers on a buyer's journey to purchasing a car, such as the frequency of auto-related searches, how many brands they're considering (based on Google searches, and if they watch any videos to help make their decision.

The new ad format is limited to U.S. advertisers now, but Google indicated it will likely expand in the near future (along with the same format being added to other types of search results as well).
