Beyond .COM

Posted on 6.22.2011

The official registry operator for the yearold .CO domain announced in June that it had reached 1 million domains since launching in July 2010. An aggressive ad campaign last summer provided the company with significant visibility from the start, as did a well-publicized rebranding campaign by Overstock.com and global support from the likes of Amazon and Twitter. The immediate popularity of the .CO extension, as well as the impending introduction of new top-level domains, signals an industry shift away from the more familiar .com, .net, .org, etc. — and greater opportunity for businesses on the Web. As one new .CO domain owner, Naval Ravikant of Angel.CO, put it, “Your next domain doesn’t need to be 23 letters long, lack vowels or cost a million dollars.”
