Cloud Company Persists Through Blackout

Score one for the fast-growing cloud computing industry.

Southern California residents were unfortunately inconvenienced this past Thursday when the area was hit with a massive blackout that left over 8 million people without power. However, Cloud9 Real Time, a San Diego-based cloud computing company, is reporting this morning that the blackout did not affect them or any of their users.

Cloud9 hosts all of the servers, tech support and data centers in the region.

The company uses a SAS70 Type II data center and provides their users with high levels of redundancy to ensure that their infrastructure services are always available through the use of generators, onsite fuel storage and fuel supply contracts that keep an uninterrupted flow of power incoming for an indefinite period of time. Because of this, Cloud9 Real Time was able to continue operating while a significant portion of the state was without power.

"I am very proud of our team and the implementation of our disaster recovery plan," says CEO Robert Chandler, "We were getting contacted by many associates asking if there would be interruption in service. I was ecstatic to tell them while our Corporate Office did not have power or phones, all of our infrastructure and servers were online and users were not going to experience any downtime from the event."

This could be an important citational incident for those who have concerns over the safety of cloud computing, and could help turn many new users onto the industry.
