Create a Mobile Sitemap

Posted on 7.05.2011

One of the hot topics when it comes to mobile is SEO. There are a lot of similarities in optimization for search via desktop and search via mobile. Website Magazine’s September 2011 edition took a high-level look at the relationship but to really move the mobile SEO needle you’ll need to have some practical guidance right along with it (and that’s why you read WM).

As discussed in the article, much of your mobile SEO strategy will come down to the choices you make between a mobile website design or mobile applications. Optimization as a practice will be different for each. If you’ve opted – or are stuck with – a mobile website only, all is not lost. Choosing the right keywords will get you a long way there, but know that you can do more to improve your chances of awareness and clicks by developing a mobile sitemap.

Mobile sitemaps are identical in purpose to traditional website sitemaps but possess a few key differences. Mobile sitemaps, which use the Sitemap protocol, include a specific tag (as seen in the code below) and an additional namespace requirement.

Keep in mind when developing mobile sitemaps to watch out for a few things. For example, it is important to only include URLs in a mobile sitemap that serve mobile content. This will enable search engines to attribute the appropriate level of value to each and not confuse two pages which may feature duplicate content.

Also note that the one tag must be included or URLs will not be crawled correctly and thus likely won’t be indexed properly.
