Cyber 5 Mobile Trends at eBay

At one point in e-commerce, Cyber Monday was the one day online retailers could bet on their traffic spiking and their digital cash drawers opening and closing all day. Today, however, this peak online sales period has expanded to Cyber 5, the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday - and a period where mobile is expected to play a critical role. 

eBay is finding, however,  that even the Cyber 5 weekend is expanding. To take advantage of people traveling on Wednesday – eBay is offering mobile-only deals to foster greater mobile shopping behaviors by being right there at the forefront when shoppers hop on their phone while they’re traveling. Retailers may want to consider the same as eBay is finding that mobile shares continue to steadily increase and shopping behaviors are at its peak during the holiday season. Last year, eBay’s biggest mobile day was on Cyber Monday, which was closely followed by Black Friday, giving eBay’s Cyber Five weekend an average of 12 percent year-over-year growth (by Gross Merchandise Bought). Specifically:

• In the last few years (2012 – 2015), eBay has seen its mobile share of GMB almost double on key holiday events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday

• In recent years (2012-2015), the share of GMB from mobile devices has grown by almost 80 percent on key retail holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday

• eBay Users are mobile: Last year (2015) eBay saw 43-45 percent of GMB Share coming from mobile devices on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, well above the industry average of about 36-37 percent for those days
