Dot Org Refuses to Slow Down
Despite the introduction of hundreds of new domain extensions in the Web ecosystem, one old stand-by is still faring quite well.
PIR, the non-profit operator of the .ORG TLD extension, released the results of its bi-annual report which details the status of .ORG - and it seemed to do quite well in 2013.
PIR's Dashboard report revealed that over 206,000 new .ORG domain names were registered in 2013, bringing the total to more than 10.3 million globally. The renewal rate, however, is where the dot org extension really shines. 85 percent of .ORG registrants, according to PIR, renwed their domains for at least three years or more.
“Historically, .ORG has been the trusted home for nonprofits all over the world. While that credibility still resonates today, it’s clear that the composition of users who carry out their passions, their ideas, and their missions on the .ORG domain is broadening,” said Brian Cute, CEO of Public Interest Registry, “Now more than ever, we’re seeing that .ORG is where action begins."
