For the Love of (Website) Speed

Posted on 11.05.2013

At some point Internet professionals are going to wonder just how fast is fast enough when it comes to their website.

It seems every time webmasters turn around they are being inundated with research highlighting the benefits of faster sites (lower bounce rates, higher satisfaction, etc.). If you're anything like your average Web worker, you get it, but you probably don't have the tools, or the know-how, to get to a point where "speed" is no longer an issue.

Google once again has taken the lead, launching its new Speed Suggestions report within Google Analytics this week. The website performance reports help Google Analytics users measure and visualize the performance, but more importantly, access actionable suggestions that could help speed up their slowest pages.

The new report shows the average page load time for the top visited pages, a page speed score, and provides a summary of suggestions (for both mobile and desktop) which might include such issues as leveraging browser caching, optimizing images, enabling compressing, eliminating render-blocking JavaScript and CSS and more.
