GoDaddy Introduces Premium DNS

Posted on 2.13.2011

GoDaddy is starting to build out its service offering - today the domain name and hosting powerhouse introduced a premium DNS offering.

The 200 million registred domain names that make up the Internet all run through DNS - a process which matches domain names with the numerical IP identifier in order to locate sites on a particular server. Yes, we've moved from IPv4 to IPv6 recently which may be one of the reasons GoDaddy wants to get control of sites using its services.

The Premium DNS service essentially enables GoDaddy to manage DNS resolution. Traffic will be balanced across multiple GoDaddy data centers in order to eliminate a single point of failure and to route DNS activies for higher performance.

Users of the service are also given the option to enable DNSSEC, a security tool for authenticating DNS records. By assigning a specially-encrypted key to validate the DNS lookup, GoDaddy's DNSSEC tool can help prevent traffic from being diverted to a malicious computer and compromised, as part of an Internet attack.
