GoDaddy's SOPA Opera - March 2012 'Net Briefs
While most Web companies and communities resoundingly opposed the recent Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), domain registrar GoDaddy apparently didn’t get the memo and initially came out in support of the proposed legislation. This led to massive outrage from customers and other concerned Internet users who quickly created GoDaddyBoycott.com. In the end, however, GoDaddy actually saw twice as many domains transfer in as went out on the day of the boycott. This windfall following the decision to completely reverse its stance on SOPA just before the big boycott may have been a case of clever marketing, dumb luck or a combination of both.
