Google Maps, Places API's Get Reviews & More

Posted on 7.02.2012

Several important announcements came out of last week's Google I/O Developer Conference, but few more immediately tangible than the introduction of business reviews in the Google Places API.

Google Maps' Product Manager Thor Mitchell indicated that developers will now/soon be able to access the top five reviews associated with a business listing. Mitchell also indicated that Google is currently working on incorporating Zagat review data to the places API.

The Google Maps API, which is currently used by over 800,000 developers (although I speculate that term developer is very loosely defined) also now includes a frequently requested feature in public transit directions and information.

Also new to Google Maps are "Symbols" - data visualization features that gives sites using the Maps API the ability to style how data is presented.
