FeedBurner and Google Reader Reporting Trouble

Posted on 5.06.2007
A few months ago (February to be precise) Google Reader started reporting the number of feed subscribers it helped users manage back to the leading RSS feed management service Feedburner.

More than a few bloggers and analysts have noticed and discussed a serious reporting (and hence accountability) issue - significant drops in the number of RSS subcribers that are reported by Google Reader. Website Magazine sees a noticeable drop over the weekends in subscriptions for example - sometimes ten percent or so of the total. Ironically, this is almost the same number of Google Reader subscribers that we have.

The problem seems to be that Google Feed Fetcher simply stops sending subscriber information periodically. While discouraging to see your RSS subscriber numbers drop, it's most likely only a a temporary issue so take a big picture view and worry no more.
