Google Shopping Updates Product Feed Specs for Internet Retailers
Everything that Google does with its Google Shopping product relies heavily on the quality of the product data provided by merchants.
In order to "provide merchants with more flexibility when organizing product data and reach more shoppers," Google has announced an update to its Shopping Feed specification that adds and revises several different attributes and policies to improve the retail experience for shoppers.
A few of the more major changes to be aware of include...
- Mobile landing page links should now be submitted separately to direct mobile shoppers to the right experience
- Merchant-defined custom bundles must now be identified as such in order to be displayed appropriately on Google Shopping
- Apparel attributes have been added to allow more detailed descriptions of a retailer's apparel products
- Item availability has been simplified to allow a clearer distinction between different availability states (e.g. in stock)
Google indicated it will begin enforcing the updated feed specification beginning September 30th, 2014.
