High Gas Prices Pump Online Retail

Posted on 5.24.2011

While consumers around the U.S. are feeling pain at the pump due to rising gas prices, the e-commerce industry is actually getting a boost. While the average price per gallon throughout the U.S. has climbed more than a dollar in the past year, online retail sales have shot up nearly 20 percent in the same span. Market research firm Synovate put the connection to the test and found that 28 percent of Americans admit to shopping online more because of rising gas prices. The Midwest, where the average price per gallon currently tops $4, led the way with 31.5 percent of people saying they were staying home and doing more shopping online.
