iMitation: the Sincerest Form of Flattery
As is normally the case in the technology industry, Apple’s unveiling of its new mobile operating system in June was (for the most part) kindheartedly met with accusations from rivals. Google casually noted the similarities between Android’s notification systems and those that Steve Jobs announced for the new iOS 5 software, and RIM couldn’t help but point out that Apple’s new iMessage program closely resembled that of BlackBerry Messenger. Perhaps the most vocal competitor, however, was Microsoft, on whose behalf an executive tweeted that the company was “flattered” by the out-and-out likeness among many features of iOS 5 and the new Windows Phone 7. If you can’t beat ’em, as they say, join ’em — and Apple does both better than the competition right now.
