Social networking sites now reach 82 percent of the world’s online population, or about 1.2 billion users, according to a recent study from comScore. One of the driving forces behind social media’s growth, the study says, is the fact that an increasing number of smartphone users now update their statuses on-the-go, check in to local establishments, redeem coupons and more. Thirty-two percent of the total U.S. mobile population reported accessing social networking sites on their phones during October 2011. The study also shows that social networking sites lead all categories in the number of display ads delivered, with Facebook being the largest publisher of U.S. display ad impressions — delivering 28 percent of all impressions in the third quarter of 2011.
