Language No Longer A Barrier in Real-Time Video Chats Thanks to Skype

Posted on 12.14.2014

The Internet has removed many obstacles when it comes to global communication it has not been able to completely remove one rather large roadblock, language.

While there are many sites and services that professionals and companies can leverage to translate text there are few that can translate speech in real-time.

Skype has announced that it is beginning to roll out a preview of its new feature called Skype Translator, a real-time speech translator tool.

The communication platform is starting the first phase of the preview with two spoken languages (English and Spanish) and more than 40 instant messaging languages. Through the program individuals that speak different languages can communicate with each other in real-time thanks to Skype Translator’s machine learning technology that will continue to learn and perfect translations as more people use it.

To sign up for the preview users must be accessing Skype from a device or desktop that is running Windows 8.1.

“This is just the beginning of a journey that will transform the way we communicate with people around the world,” states the Skype blog post in which the Skype Translator preview was announced. “Our long-term goal for speech translation is to translate as many languages as possible on as many platforms as possible and deliver the best Skype Translator experience on each individual platform for our more than 300 million connected users.”
