Apple, Square, PayPal and Visa are just some of the high-profile companies battling for position in the mobile payments space, but the June announcement of Google Wallet has jettisoned the concept of paying for physical goods via smartphone into many Americans’ everyday conversations. According to a recent survey from another competitor, MasterCard, 62 percent of smartphone users in the U.S. are open to the idea of making mobile-enabled purchases. Most important for businesses to know is that, not altogether surprisingly, the younger 18 to 34 demographic is leading the charge — and may soon start favoring retailers that use this trend-setting technology.
