MapQuest Adds 700K Business Listings
Online maps provider Mapquest has just added 700,000 business listings to its database through a partnership with CitySearch.
MapQuest users will find these listings nationwide in search categories such as restaurants, hotels, shopping, spas, bars, clubs and more. There will also be editorial content including restaurant menus, coupons, special offers, business hours, and customer ratings, reviews and directions.
Compete.com estimates that MapQuest had just under 39 million visitors in the month of November (approximate) – a 20% reduction from its June-July high of just under 50 million. MapQuest has released a slew of new features during the month however including new printing options, street-level imagery and its new search categories which could help it turn the tide.
There is clearly a lot of activity occurring in the local space. Mike Blumenthal, on the Understanding Google Maps & Local Search Blog, posted “Who Gets Traffic in the Local Space” yesterday and it shows that Google Maps has passed both Craigslist and MapQuest throughout this year. Last week the acquisition rumors about Google acquiring Yelp would have been Google out of reach. The fact that CitySearch and MapQuest are joining forces is certainly significant in this challenging landscape.
