Merchants See Sales Soar on Free Shipping Day
ShopVisible merchants saw a 24 percent increase in order volume on 2014’s National Free Shipping Day when compared to 2013.
Sales on Free Shipping Day, which was December 18th, were partially driven by mobile devices according to ShopVisible’s “Dashing Thru the Data” dashboard. In fact, 26 percent of the total online sales resulted from smartphones and 40 percent of site traffic came from a combination of tablet and mobile devices, with 14 percent specifically coming from tablets during the last day of the online holiday shopping rush.
It is also important to note that ShopVisible’s data found that alternative payment methods, such as PayPal and Amazon Payments, captured 35 percent of total online payments on National Free Shipping Day. According to the data, 15 percent of total sales came from PayPal and 18 percent came from Amazon Payments. This suggests that retailers need to continue to integrate alternative payment options into their sites going into the New Year.
“Our Dashing Thru the Data dashboard enables retailers to identify trends in holiday shopping behaviors that may be integrated in the new year, and this year’s Free Shipping Day data shows the influence of shipping discounts among savvy online shoppers,” said Sean Cook, CEO of ShopVisible. “The significant increase in smartphone traffic and alternative payments also indicates the significance of omnichannel functionalities needed to meet shoppers’ growing expectations.”
