Movers & Shakers: Verizon Acquires Yahoo!
Marissa Mayer has done it! Verizon announced today that it would be acquiring Yahoo for $4.83 billion in cash.
Yahoo will merge with Verizon's AOL unit. Verizon will now own/operate Yahoo's search, mail, content, and advertising technology businesses. Mayer indicated she will be staying with Yahoo for the time being.
Verizon's acquisition of Yahoo will means that it will overtake Microsoft to become the third largest digital advertiser, but it's still way behind Google in first place, and Facebook in second, per eMarketer. The company's efforts to compete with the two giants have so far cost nearly $10 billion, including the purchases of AOL and Yahoo.
