Page Views No More Says Neilsen

Neilsen/Netratings, a leading online measurement service, has decided to cease using page views to determine rankings and begin tracking how long visitors spend at the sites instead.

There has been a lot of industry discussion of the matter, as online video and new technologies such as Ajax (which allows sites to update data automatically and continually) make page views less meaningful.

While many ranking providers still measure average time spent and the average number of sessions, monitoring total time spent gives advertisers a better picture of what sites are most popular, and hence which is the best investment for their promotional dollar.
