New APIs for iOS 4
New in iOS 4 (for Mobile Developers)
There's a lot you should know about iOS 4 if you're a mobile developer as it provides for far improved user experience, opportunities for monetization and let's not forget about all the new opportunities.
Multitasking: Apple has released seven new multitasking services which have dramatically improved overall user experience. These multitasking services provide the ability for applications to run in the background (primarily for audio and location apps) and notifications (push notifications which means no more burden on the server, and local notifications which are often included for user alerts).
iAd: The new mobile advertising platform from Apple gives the company an immediate position in the mobile advertising media market. What makes the system so unique is that instead of forcing open a browser for the user to access an advertiser's webpage, iAd displays interactive ad content (in some cases full-screen video) without leaving the app. Apple will sell and serve (dynamic and wireless delivery) the advertising - developers will earn 60 percent of the revenue.
API's: Multitasking and monetization are fine and dandy but with 1500 new API's, the iPhone SDK 4 contains functionality that presents new opportunities for your application. Some of the API's include:
- Calendar Access: Apps can now create and edit events directly in the Calendar app
- In-App SMS: Compose SMS messages from within apps
- Photo Library Access: Direct access to user photos and videos
- also includes video playback, improvements to the Map Kit, and more
