QUICK HIT: Pinterest is Social Media's Dark Horse
Pinterest now reportedly has some 150 million active users and one specific data point may force you to rethink your opinion of the social media curation and sharing platform.
Pinterest founder and CEO Ben Silbermann revealed in a blog post that while women still outrank men on the platform (60-40 percent), the site is now attracting more male users than ever; Silbermann even noted a huge 70 percent increase in male signups compared to last year.
Pinterest is also becoming less of a U.S. phenomenon. More than half (80 million) of its user base, and 75 percent of new signups, are based outside of the U.S., which is excellent news for the platform’s global prospects.
There have been numerous developments for Pinterest over the past year that will likely help further establish its presence on the social 'net. The company made several acquisitions recently, for example, including that of Fleksy, Tote and Instapaper, and has released a rather comprehensive suite of advertising offerings worthy of note including its new auction-based CPM campaigns.
