Quick Update on Top New gTLDS
The conversation around new gTLDs has certainly whimpered from a couple years ago but they remain a top way to help brands market themselves and secure a domain name that is relevant to their offerings, which may not have been available as a .com. Tech companies, for instance, are accepting .io as an option for their business (e.g., postach.io and card.io) akin to a calling card of being a fresh startup. So what are the top new gTLDs in play?
With Google's own usage of the domain ending (its parent company uses abc.xyz), it shouldn't come as a shock that .xyz remains the new gTLD with the highest share of registrations, followed by .top and .win (click on the image below to expand).
As far as the fastest-growing new gTLDs, .loan, .men, .site, .city and .win take the top five spots.
There doesn't seem to be any SEO value for existing website owners who want to move to a new TLD, but leveraging a domain ending like .win or .vip for specific marketing campaigns can be memorable enough to boost key performance metrics for that campaign. As stated, there is also value for new companies looking to get people to their site using a short and easy-to-remember URL, which just often aren't available as a .com.
