Sectors at Risk for Email-Based Cyberattacks
Some verticals are just more prone to attacks than others according to a data from Agari, a security solution that detects and prevents cyberthreats.
Agari's Q4 Email TrustIndex report, which culled data from more than 1 trillion email messages, identified where (the sectors and companies) the most dangerous email messages originate.
According to Agari's research, health care was the worst performer across all measures of the study and was the most susceptible to email attacks and cyber fraud. Consumers were five times more likely to receive a malicious email from a health care provider than any other company analyzed in the report.
Retailers however don't fall far behind. The sector's "ThreatScore" was eight times higher in Q4 over the previous quarter. Agari categorized 93 percent of retailers as "sitting ducks." Etailers however fared far better. Companies like Amazon, Netflix and Newegg have perfect or near perfect TrustScores according to Agari.
"Many companies have not yet focused on consumer protection from email cyberthreats and the significant risk this presents, allowing cybercriminals to stay very busy," said Patrick Peterson, chief executive officer of Agari. "The TrustIndex shows the industry sectors and companies that do the most -- and the least -- to detect and prevent cyberthreats, so consumers aren't shouldering the burden of weak security practices. We want to help restore trust in the email channel and make sure the bad guys don't have easy access to harm consumers."
