Semantics: It's What's New on the SERPs

Posted on 3.25.2009

Google announced some improvements to its search result pages and covered them in good detail on its official blog.

Google deployed a technology that it claims can better understand associations and concepts related to a user search. One of the first applications, as you might guess, is to provide a better useful related search. Google is now able to target more queries, more languages (37 of them) and make suggestions that are more relevant - even for longer queries.

Google also made a change to how it handles longer snippets on its search result pages. Snippets - the text that follows the listing title - are restricted when queries are longer. Now, when there are more than three words in the query, Google will show additional lines of information.
