Showing Better Videos in the FB News Feed

Posted on 6.23.2014

Facebook has changed how it ranks videos that people and Pages upload to the social network.

The timing couldn't be more perfect, as twice as many people now watch videos on Facebook compared to just six months ago (although that might just have something to do with the social network releasing some video advertising solutions).

The new method for video ranking evaluates whether users actually watched a video, and if so, for how long. This data will be coupled with additional metrics including likes, comments and shares according to Facebook.

The information that Facebook is gathering about users personal video consumption habits will enable the social network to show more videos to those that watch then, and fewer to those that do not. Facebook indicated that in its early tests, the change resulted in more people watching more videos that were relevant to their particular interests.
