Slow Moving Clouds Over the Enterprise
Perhaps it's the pervasive security concerns or the increased compliance challenges, but enterprise adoption of cloud applications is slower than expected according to the annual Bitglass Cloud Adoption Report.
Bitglass found that cloud-based email is one of the main drivers of cloud adoption - at least for private companies. Gmail was adopted by 16.5 percent of private companies compared to 11.9 percent among all companies sampled (over 81,000 companies in a range of industries and companies of various sizes).
The main reason companies large and small are not moving to the cloud is security. Fifty-two percent of large companies and 33 percent of small to medium companies cited security as their primary concern in the report - with the percentage increasing dramatically (25 percent in October 2011 compared to 42 percent in July 2013).
“We wanted to separate hype from reality with regard to cloud adoption in the enterprise. We found that while more strategic, company-wide adoption of the cloud is starting to take hold, there are still basic security mechanisms that have not been put into place,” said Nat Kausik, CEO of Bitglass. “As new technologies to secure cloud apps gain footing, we expect accelerated adoption to occur, especially among larger companies and those in regulated industries.”
