Snapchat Delivers Its Very First Ad
Snapchat users found a surprise in the “recent update” section of their app this weekend, as the ephemeral messaging platform featured its very first advertisement for the upcoming movie, Ouija.
Snapchat announced the arrival of ads in a blog post on Oct. 17, noting that initially the ads would only be available to users in the United States. Just like the company’s “Story” feature, ads are featured for 24 hours in the recent update section and then disappear. Plus, users have the choice of whether or not they want to view ads. Snapchat says that its ads are not targeted and that the reason the company is launching ads is so it can start making money.
“We won’t put advertisements in your personal communication – things like Snaps or Chats. That would be totally rude,” Snapchat notes in its announcement. “We want to see if we can deliver an experience that’s fun and informative, the way ads used to be, before they got creepy and targeted. It’s nice when all of the brilliant creative minds out there get our attention with terrific content.”
