We are only one month into 2016, but that doesn’t mean that the social Web has been quiet. Rather, social networks from Twitter and Facebook to WhatsApp and YouTube have been making updates to improve their platforms for their users in the New Year.

* Twitter Gives Advertisers Something to Talk About – Twitter unveiled a new ad format, dubbed conversation ads, which make it easy for consumers to engage with and spread a brand’s campaign message. The format includes a call-to-action (CTA) button with customizable hashtags that encourage engagement.
* Facebook Messenger Hits a Big Milestone – Facebook revealed that its Messenger platform reached 800 million monthly users in January.
* Can Twitter Hold On? – Twitter share are not only hitting new lows, but other social networks are also capitalizing on the real-time nature hat Twitter has always provided. Because of this, many marketers are wondering about Twitter’s success in the future.
* WhatsApp Kills Paid Subscriptions – Popular Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp announced that it is getting rid of paid subscriptions.
* Facebook Looks to Win with Sports Stadium – In an effort to tackle the sports world, Facebook unveiled a new dedicated place on its platform where users can experience sports in real-time.
* A Strong Start for Instagram Ads – A new study from Brand Networks reveals that advertisers are flocking to Instagram’s ad platform. In doing so, advertisers are driving competition and costs, especially in the consumer package goods, fashion and retail verticals.
* FourSquare Fosters Trip Planning – A new feature, dubbed FourSquare Trip Tips, aims to help consumers plan their next adventure.
* By the Numbers…Social & Search’s Newest Returns – A new report from Kenshoo reveals that social media advertising experienced a large year-over-year (YOY) increase in spend (50 percent), especially when compared to paid search’s 8 percent YOY increase.
* Google Shows Promise in Social Login – Gigya’s Landscape of Customer Identity report for Q4 2015 reveals that while Facebook credential accounted for 62 percent of all website social logins, the social network saw a decline from Q2 when it peaked at 66 percent. The reason for the decline? Most likely Google.
* YouTube Unveils Donation Cards – In an effort to help creators raise money for their favorite causes, YouTube unveiled a new feature called donation cards.
* Facebook Expands Its Live Video Functionality – Facebook’s live video functionality is now being rolled out to all U.S. iPhone users. The social network also plans to make the feature available across the globe in the coming weeks, as well as to Android users soon.
