Storage Wars

Posted on 4.29.2012

Amazon Web Services recently reported adding approximately 143 billion new objects to its Simple Storage Service (S3) in Q1 of 2012. This comes not long after the announcement that in 2011 S3 tripled the number of stored objects over what it had at the end of 2010. If Amazon keeps up this pace, it should have added 572 billion objects for the year by this time in 2013, which will amount to over 1.3 trillion stored objects.

That being said, some are predicting the pace to slow soon because much of the current growth has come after Amazon added object-expiration and multi-object deletion features, making it easier for developers to get rid of objects in the future.
