Apple's App Store had a year that would blow Dr. Evil's mind, as the company announced that customers spent more than $10 billion in 2013.

In fact, the last month of the year saw record-breaking sales, with customers spending more than $1 billion in December alone and downloading almost 3 billion apps - which makes December 2013 the most successful month in App Store history. This data is good news for developers, who have now earned $15 billion through the App Store.

"We'd like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. "The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014."

The App Store currently offers more than 1 million apps, in 24 categories, to its users in 155 countries. According to the company, iOS 7 contributed to the success of the App Store in 2013, as it enabled developers to create apps that took advantage of the redesigned user interface, as well as the more than 200 new features and APIs.
