The Big Mistake of Three Bird Nest & Etsy

Posted on 8.26.2015

When you build your business on the success of another enterprise, there's a greater amount of risk and Etsy retailer Three Bird Nest is about to find out just how much.

The Etsy shop, which offers "bohemian" clothing and accessories, announced its decision to depart from the Etsy marketplace effective immediately. Since 2011, according to the company, Three Bird Nest’s Etsy shop was one of the fastest growing shops on Etsy and brought in an average of $60,000 USD a month in sales to the shop. So why is it leaving?

“We want to focus on Three Bird Nest's website growth and potentially explore other marketplaces that fit more in line with our core values as a company,” said Three Bird Nest founder Alicia Shaffer. “We are looking forward to streamlining our sales and showcasing up and coming brands as well as our own designs," Shaffer finished.

What Shaffer and Three Bird Nest may not have considered is the incredible expense of moving on from Etsy, in terms of both the infrastructure that will be required and awareness the marketplace was able to generate on its behalf.

So, what this a good move? Can independent sellers like Three Bird Nest make it without Etsy? Will other sellers follow suit? Share your thoughts by submitting a comment below!
