The Perfect Character Count Per Line with FlowType.js

Posted on 8.28.2013

Typography plays an important role in readability, and it is a commonly held belief that the most legible typography contains between 45 and 75 characters per line.

Matching or meeting that character limit can be difficult however using CSS Media-queries with the variety of screen sizes in use today. FlowType.JS eases this difficulty by introducing responsive typography, changing the font-size—and subsequently the line-height—based on a specific element's width. This allows for a perfect character count per line at any screen width. Pretty awesome.

FlowType.js offers several configuration options, including element size thresholds (which stops FlowType.JS from resizing once the element reaches beyond specific pixel dimensions), font-size thresholds (which stop the plugin from resizing the text beyond certain font-sizes) and font-size/line-height rations.
